Camp CHRIS

Camp CHRIS is the only camp of its kind in metro Atlanta. This nine week summer camp provides physical, recreational and educational activities to Atlanta’s severely emotionally disturbed children. These children have experienced repeated school failures, serious emotional problems, and have been victims of physical, sexual, and/or psychological abuse. Without Camp CHRIS, these kids will not be able to experience summer camp because of their behavioral problems or histories of being expelled from other camps. Our camp builds confidence, social skills, non-violent and creative self-expression, and a positive peer culture for kids who struggle with emotional and behavioral problems. This camp also enables parents to maintain their employment knowing their children are enjoying a safe, supervised, positive experience. The hours of operation are from 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Camp CHRIS provides a nutritious breakfast and lunch meals to the youth.Camp CHRIS provides door to door transportation for participants residing in Fulton and DeKalb counties and works closely with all families to coordinate.

FACTS:

• 90% of parents report that their child demonstrates improved behavior.
• 95% of families maintain uninterrupted summer employment.
• More than 200 families will contact Camp CHRIS for help this summer.

Shameika was in 11 different foster homes over the past six years. She also spent time with the Department of Juvenile Justice. She came to Camp CHRIS because no other camp would accept her due to her negative behavior. She became angry or upset very easily. She would throw rocks, kick tables and scream when she was unhappy. At Camp CHRIS she bonded with her camp counselor and learned to express her anger through poetry, art and dancing. I feel confident that Shameika is able to attend a traditional camp next summer.
